Fountain Illustration Competition

At the end of March, Year 2 went to St Paul’s Park to see the restoration of the fountain in action! It was first built in 1889 and hadn’t had flowing water in 50 years. The charity ‘Proud Places’, an organisation that educates children about the world around them, led a talk and showed the children the different hardness levels of different kinds of rock. We learned that the St Paul’s Fountain is made out of rose granite because it is very hard!

Year 2 were able to take part in a competition—designing illustrations to go on a brochure that would tell the community about the fountain’s history and restoration.

Some children entered this competition independently during the Easter Holidays. Everyone else had a chance to create a design back in school after Easter.

Now that the new piping in the fountain is all connected and water is flowing again, we met to celebrate the successful restoration and to have a prize-giving ceremony.

The children who entered the competition independently in the holidays were presented with special certificates. The overall winners (it was so hard for the Proud Places organisation to choose that they gave a joint 3rd place award) were given a special certificate, a book and a reusable water bottle.

All the children who participated in the competition received a pen.

After the ceremony, the winners of the brochure competition went to some of the houses next to the park. We shared some facts about the fountain with the residents and handed out the special brochures.

We would like to give special thanks to ‘Proud Places’ for sharing such valuable and interesting information with us and for teaching us the importance of restoring historical landmarks for the education and enjoyment of future generations. Also, thanks to the Heritage of London Trust, the London Borough of Hounslow and Friends of St. Paul’s Recreation ground for investing in keeping Brentford’s history alive.

Take a look at the Proud Places website to learn more about them and the conservation projects they have been involved in! https://www.proudplaces.org/
