6L’s Second Sayers Croft Day

We woke up bright and early and had a lovely breakfast of toast, boiled eggs, bacon, sausages, pancakes (with syrup), fruit and cereal!

Then we went into the Sayers Croft Celtic Roundhouse and learned about how Celts lived, hunted and fought against the Romans. We even tried some Roman military strategies—a favourite was the ‘Testudo formation’ (Testudo being Latin for turtle) where we arranged the shields to protect the whole group of soldiers.

Later, we learned how to use a compass and polished our skills by finding our way to different checkpoints on a trail using only a compass.

Before dinner, we put some of our new skills to use (orienteering and compass work) and worked as a whole class to solve problems that led to clues we needed to be able to rescue a lost ‘Special Agent’. We rescued him and brought him back in a stretcher we made ourselves. We also visited the tuck shop to stock up on some treats.

After dinner, we had an amazing Night Walk where we walked through the woods, being led by reflective markers we found using our flashlights. Then we stopped and listened to the sounds of nature around us and gazed up at the stars. Many of us couldn’t believe how many stars we could see.

We’re having a lovely time and can’t wait to tell you all about it!
