3M investigate the permeability of different soils

Posted by Mrs Heyhoe on 18/12/23 at 06:12 PM

Last week in science, 3M investigated how permeable different soils were. ‘Permeable’ means that water flows through it. The permeability of soil affects which plants will grow and how well they will grow.

Each group observed how much water drained through the different types of soil in 5 minutes. The 5 different types of soil tested were chalk, chalk loam, clay, clay loam and sandy soil.

The group investigating the sandy soil said, ‘300ml has gone through - that’s all the water!’  The class concluded that sandy soil was the most permeable soil.
