At the end of last term, a small group of Year 5 children taught a maths lesson to Year 2.

The Year 5 children discussed and analysed the Year 2 maths curriculum and decided to teach a problem solving lesson on ‘patterns’. They then devised activities around the subject of patterns. They thought of number patterns and shape patterns. They created their own tessellations to show the Year 2 children. The Year 5 children then planned the lesson, discussing issues such as timing and seating arrangements. The Year 5 children created a Keynote presentation to show to the Year 2 children during the lesson.

During the lesson, the Year 5 children gave the Year 2 children a biscuit decorating problem to solve from the Nrich website. The Year 2 enjoyed this and thought of ways to solve it. One child suggested using symbols to solve it.

After the lesson, the Year 5 children said that they enjoyed the experience of teaching so much that they would like to “do it again”. Thank you to Year 2 for working hard during the lesson.
