World Jigsaw

In Topic in 6KL we have been exploring our ‘Mountains and Volcanoes’ unit. This week we found out about different types of mountains and how they are formed. To help the children better understand how tectonic plates piece together we created a jigsaw using continental plates. Before the task we watched an animation showing how the plates that make up the earth’s crust have changed and moved over millions of years. The class found it very interesting and asked some pertinent questions.

They were then challenged to try and piece the ‘world’ back together, thinking carefully about the continents and where plates might go. It wasn’t easy and we worked together to get started but many of the children eventually managed to complete the ‘plates puzzle’. It was great to see the resilience and thought they put into the task, as well as the pride if they managed it!
