Provisions for a voyage

In 6KL this half term we have been learning about Tudor Exploration. We researched the foods that would have been available on board and why certain foods were eaten more often. ‘Ship’s Biscuits’ were a staple part of a sailor’s diet because they were easy to make; required few ingredients; could be made in large batches and lasted a while before going stale.

The children worked in groups to make their own batches of ship’s biscuits (some finding that they recipe for the dough perhaps wasn’t as straight forward as they thought!) and then after baking they were able to taste test them.

Their reactions were very interesting! Some children couldn’t believe how “hard and disgusting” the biscuits were, whereas some children thought they tasted quite nice, like bread. Despite our first impressions we did all agree that we would not want to eat them for every meal!
