Jim’s Decision

Years 5 and 6 are continuing to explore the Victorian based novel ‘Street Child’. We have been struck by the challenges and hardships faced by the characters, including spending time in the Workhouse. Towards the end of last week we discussed whether the main character, Jim, should risk trying to escape from the Workhouse. To help us we did Conscience Alley- a child went into role as Jim and had to walk down the ‘alley’ listening to whispers of reasons why he should or should not leave the Workhouse. He then had to make his final decision.
The children really seemed to enjoy this Drama technique and used the ideas to write internal monologues as Jim showing what he decided to do.
