Last term, a group of Year 6 children took part in a weekly ‘coding club’. During the sessions, the children learnt how to create an animation using block coding in Scratch. They also learnt how to create a website using HTML code using Trinket.

During the coding sessions, the children discussed how they use technology in their daily lives and how this can be done safely.* They came up with very creative ideas and thought very deeply about what they were doing.

The children devised an idea for an app to encourage families to spend less time on their devices and more time with each other. The children worked in two teams using an ‘information radiator’ based on the Toyota model of working. With some help from an expert in the industry, they were able to build the following two websites:
.
Bosses in charge
Rainbow Unicorns

The children also came up with a plan on how to improve the school’s data storage and retrieval system. They presented their ideas to a panel.

At the end of term, the children were given a special coding club certificate.
