Trip to John’s Boatworks

Yesterday a group of Year 3 children went on a trip to visit John’s Boatworks on Lot’s Ait in Brentford.

The children were very inquisitive, asking John lots of questions.  Inside the boat shed they saw machines for cutting wood.  They learnt how the wood is cut using machines and then worked on by hand with chisels and sandpaper.  Outside in the boatyard, the children found out how a boat is steered.  The children watched the underside of a boat being repainted and were shown how the paint is removed with a special tool shaped like a wheel.  The children were fascinated by a submarine, which is being renovated in the boatyard.  The children sat in the wooded part of the island and sketched the trees, the boat shed and boats.  They learnt that the willows on Lot’s Ait were used to make baskets.  The children also saw two herons on the trip and met two black cats, which enjoyed being stroked.

The children really enjoyed the visit and we would like to thank John very much for having us.  If you would like to see more photos from the trip, please have a look in the gallery.
