Pupil Premium Trip to the London Museum of Water and Steam on Thursday 26th May 2016

We had a brilliant time at the London Museum of Water and Steam. The children enjoyed trying their hands at pumping water using four of London’s most popular pumps, some designed by the Romans. They went inside a sewage pipe and met a rat. The children were fascinated to discover the miniature houses from different periods. They were very interested to learn what people used to do with their toilet waste! We talked about how we are very lucky now to have running water and flushing toilets.

The children also found a robotic rat, which checks which parts of the sewers need repairing. We found an exhibit about safe drinking water. Everyone voted for what we thought was the ‘safe’ drinking water. We all discovered that we were wrong and, if we had drunk the water we voted for, we would have died of cholera! The children learnt that the safe drinking water had fish and plants living in it.

We met one of the museum volunteers, who showed the children how to work a steam engine. The children also enjoyed the ‘splash zone’, where they created dams and filled water cups with wheels and pumps. We finished with a picnic in the Museum’s kitchen garden. The children’s favourite part of the garden was the pond, where they spotted tadpoles popping up to the surface.
