Caring for all. Growing with God

Learning English and maths when we’re shopping and cooking

A group of year 6 children baked gingerbread biscuits this morning.

On Tuesday, the children were given the recipe and they wrote a shopping list after doubling the amounts of the ingredients.  They then visited Morrisons supermarket to buy the ingredients.  They discussed the different quantities and prices available and kept a running total of what they were spending.  They then put their shopping through the self service till.  Back at school, they checked that the the receipt showed the correct total by adding up the prices.

Today, the children measured out the ingredients and followed the recipe to make gingerbread dough.  They then formed letters with the dough and put them in the oven.  They were in charge of watching the clock to time the cooking.  The children decorated their letters and spelt out their spelling words.

The children thought that making gingerbread words was a fun way to learn their tricky spelling words.  Going shopping and cooking was also a good way to practise maths, in particular, adding money and using the clock.

If you would like to make gingerbread, please find the recipe attached.

The spelling words for Year 6 children are also attached.  Have fun learning the tricky spelling words together!
